Artist's Statement

My work begins with drawing.

Although my images are created digitally, I think of them as paintings. I use the screen much as I once used paper or canvas—drawing, erasing, layering, recomposing and allowing images from very different sources to collide.

My work moves freely between realism, surrealism, cubism, abstraction and graphic design. Art history is an important source, but so are music, sport, popular culture, memory and ordinary observation.

I am particularly interested in what happens when recognizable images are taken out of their original context and made to coexist with images from another time or visual language.

The result is intentionally eclectic. A single image might contain a Renaissance reference, a contemporary cultural figure, an abstract passage, a visual joke. I want the viewer to discover those relationships gradually.

Lullaby

Lullaby

George Floyd breathes his last breath under the knee, the wisps become pink paisley, enveloping the sleeping white babies. Stacked bodies in a slave ship become a motif, witness to rioting, lynching, a prison cell inmate, and the inconsolable black infant.
